GRANT FROM THE SANTA BARBARA FOUNDATION

The Santa Barbara Foundation has given the URC a grant of $3,495, the full amount requested, for the repair and improvement of the huge 30-foot skylight in the middle of the roof above the foyer. Frank Schipper Construction will do the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. As always, the URC Board is deeply grateful to the SBF for their support.

Iglesia de Fuentes de Esperanza Pastor Hugo Otaola, of Fuentes de Esperanza, a Hispanic outreach of Community Covenant Church in Goleta, has rented office space at the URC for over a year now. His church has conducted several community service projects out of the URC, including food and clothing distributions, after-school tutoring for children and English classes for adults. The church also holds its regular Sunday worship services in the auditorium.

INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST TENANTS

CALM (Child Abuse Listening and Mediation), non-profit social service organization dedicated to the eradication of domestic violence, has rented two offices at the URC since April 2001. CALM uses the URC offices for administrative business as well as counseling services to clients. Six counselors use the offices at different times to conduct intervention sessions with families in need from the local community. The URC is pleased that such a vital social service organization has chosen to locate in our building, as it provides an important connection to the IV community, a vital aspect of our mission.

The Faith Initiative of South Santa Barbara County has been housed at the URC since October 2001. An organization of faith leaders in the community who are dedicated to putting their faith into action, the Faith Initiative was started by Richard Ramos, its current director, and Charles Slosser, director of the Santa Barbara Foundation.

MEET THE STAFF AT THE URC

Patty Forgie started working at the URC as the administrative coordinator in September, 2001. In July 2002, she began her new responsibilities as executive director. In that role, she has hired and trained a part-time (8 hours/week) administrative assistant, Jennifer Stoy, who has been working at the URC since late September 2002. Patty's new duties include program development, publicity and outreach (regular newsletters, website, etc.), grant writing, staff supervision and oversight of building issues. She will be developing projects with the Planning Committee and is very excited about her new role.

Jennifer Stoy, our new administrative assistant since late September, is a second-year graduate student in English literature at UCSB. She comes to us with years of experience working as an administrative assistant in interesting places, from an electric go-kart manufacturing company and test track in San Diego, California to a large health insurance company in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Currently, she is working on passing her master's exams in the spring in preparation for her dissertation, which she believes will be on the discourses of sainthood and celebrity. Jennifer works afternoons at the URC on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and is a lively and exciting addition to the URC. We are glad that she is here!

Mark Fiocco, our staff resident in charge of cleaning the building, received his Ph.D. in philosophy from UCSB last spring. He is now a lecturer there and is looking for a permanent tenure-track job teaching philosophy somewhere in the country. Mark has been the mainstay of building maintenance and security, so it will be hard to replace him when he finally lands his ideal job. We still wish him luck.
